How it was tested: The largest independent trial of these supplements. Glucosamine hydrochloride and chondroitin, alone or together, were no better than placebo overall. A subgroup with worse pain did better, which the authors themselves called preliminary.

The same proposed mechanism as the sulfate; the salt differs, and so did the result.

Dose: 1500 mg

Tested as: glucosamine hydrochloride 1500 mg daily, given as 500 mg three times a day
