Kybella / Belkyra / ATX-101
Synthetic deoxycholic acid — a naturally occurring bile acid that aids fat digestion — is injected directly into submental (double chin) fat to permanently destroy fat cells. Each treatment session produces permanent elimination of treated fat cells.
How it works
Deoxycholic acid disrupts adipocyte cell membranes via detergent-like phospholipid solubilisation, causing immediate cell lysis. Inflammatory response clears debris; surrounding tissue (skin, muscle, nerves) is spared as deoxycholic acid selectively targets fat cells due to their higher lipid content. The destroyed fat cells cannot regenerate — results are permanent unless significant weight gain occurs.
Reported benefits
- Permanent submental (double chin) fat reduction
- Improved jawline definition and neck contour
- Non-surgical alternative to liposuction for chin fat
- Off-label: small localised fat deposits (jowls, bra fat, knees)
