Cavitation / Ultrasound Body Sculpting / Accent / BTL

Low-frequency ultrasound energy creates microscopic bubbles within fat tissue that implode (cavitate), rupturing adipocyte cell membranes. The released fat is then metabolised by the lymphatic system — a non-invasive fat reduction approach that requires no needles or surgery.

How it works

Ultrasound waves at 40kHz create alternating compression and rarefaction cycles in tissue. At critical amplitude, microbubbles form within the fat cells and implode via inertial cavitation, generating mechanical shockwaves and localised heat that disrupt adipocyte membranes. Liberated triglycerides are transported via the lymphatic system to the liver for metabolisation. Treatment is typically combined with lymphatic drainage to accelerate fat clearance.

Reported benefits

  • Localised fat reduction without surgery
  • Cellulite reduction and skin texture improvement
  • Body contouring for abdomen, hips, thighs, arms
  • Often combined with RF for enhanced skin tightening
  • No downtime or recovery period
  • Suitable as a comfortable in-spa/clinic treatment

Regulatory status

European Union· EMA· 2008
Authorized

Approved for: Body contouring, Cellulite treatment, Circumferential reduction

Multiple ultrasound cavitation devices CE-marked as Class IIa medical devices in EU. Widely available in beauty salons and aesthetic clinics. BTL, Accent Prime, and other devices CE-certified.

United Kingdom· MHRA· 2008
Off-label use

Approved for: Body contouring and cellulite improvement

CE-marked devices MHRA-registered. Available at aesthetic and beauty clinics. Regulatory status depends on specific device claims.

United States· FDA
Off-label use

Approved for: Some devices FDA-cleared for temporary circumferential reduction, Temporary fat layer reduction

Some ultrasound cavitation devices FDA-cleared under 510(k) for temporary circumferential reduction. However, "fat reduction" or "fat cell destruction" claims require more rigorous clearance. Many devices operate in a regulatory grey area. FDA has sent warning letters to some cavitation device manufacturers for unapproved claims.
