mineral · for chronic fatigue

Copper

Copper helps release stored iron for red blood cells, and helps mitochondria make energy.

Say that in clinical terms

Ceruloplasmin mobilizes iron from storage, enabling hemoglobin synthesis. Cytochrome c oxidase supports mitochondrial ATP production.

How strong is the research?

Not verified evidence

1 paper read.

Who was studied: Studied in chronic fatigue patients who had their copper levels measured in a clinic.

No human clinical trial tests copper supplementation in any form for chronic fatigue syndrome or fatigue as a primary endpoint; PubMed search returned zero matching intervention trials. The most relevant systematic review (Joustra et al. We cannot stand behind this claim on the evidence we have, so it carries no rating.

How much to take

daily

1–2 mg

Deficiency rare but possible with high zinc intake or malabsorption. Monitor if supplementing long-term.

Before you take it

  • NIH ODS Tolerable Upper Intake Level for adults 19 and older is 10 mg/day (10,000 mcg) elemental copper.
  • Wilson's disease is a contraindication: individuals with Wilson's disease or hereditary hepatic copper metabolism disorders should not take supplemental copper except under specialist supervision, due to risk of copper accumulation causing hepatic cirrhosis and neurological damage.
  • Sustained high-dose zinc supplementation (typically above 50 mg/day) can deplete copper by inducing intestinal metallothionein, which sequesters copper and prevents absorption; this is the most common drug/nutrient interaction for copper.
  • Toxicity at excessive doses presents as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea; chronic severe toxicity can cause hepatotoxicity and renal dysfunction.
  • NIH ODS states copper has no known clinically relevant interactions with medications.

What we make of it

The biology is sound but assumes a deficiency most people do not have.

The detail

Copper genuinely is needed to release stored iron and to run part of the cell’s energy machinery. That reasoning only applies if you are actually deficient, which is uncommon.
