Saffron
Saffron is the dried stigma of the crocus flower, and the spice most people know from cooking. As a supplement it is sold standardised for safranal or crocin, usually around 30 mg a day.

62 active adults took saffron for 6 weeks. None of them had been picked for sleep problems. Total sleep time and sleep efficiency were no different from placebo.

Tested as: A standard saffron extract, 30 mg a day. Doses of 100 mg worked best in one group.
Who was studied: Adults who slept badly. Some had insomnia, type 2 diabetes, or were on methadone.
