8 safety notes

Soluble fiber from psyllium forms a viscous gel in the gut that binds bile acids and dietary cholesterol, increasing their excretion in stool and prompting the liver to pull more LDL cholesterol out of the blood to replace the lost bile acids.

Dose: 7–15 g

Tested as: psyllium husk (Plantago ovata) soluble fiber, 7-15 g/day (FDA-qualifying dose is 7 g/day soluble fiber from husk of >=95% purity; trial median dose ~10.2 g whole husk/day), taken with adequate fluid, as an adjunct to a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol

EGCG for High Cholesterol

Strong

2 studies · 2 supporting · 0 against

8 safety notes

EGCG is thought to reduce intestinal absorption of dietary cholesterol and modestly increase LDL-receptor activity in the liver, improving clearance of LDL cholesterol from the blood.

Dose: 107–856 mg

Tested as: green tea extract standardized to EGCG, 107-856 mg EGCG/day for 4-14 weeks, taken as a concentrated supplement (not brewed tea)
