Catechins, especially EGCG, are proposed to increase energy expenditure and fat oxidation, partly by inhibiting the enzyme that breaks down noradrenaline - an effect that appears to depend on caffeine being present alongside the catechins.

In men given 400 mg/day decaffeinated EGCG for 1 year, the extract was bioavailable and well tolerated but produced no significant change in body weight, BMI, or waist-to-hip ratio versus placebo.
