L-Taurine for Chronic Fatigue

Proposed roles in mitochondrial function and antioxidant defense give a plausible rationale for an energy/fatigue effect, but this has not translated into a validated standalone human effect.

How strong is the research?

No Benefit evidence

8 acute, single-dose, double-blind crossover RCTs in 244 healthy adults testing taurine alone. Any positive mood/well-being effects were minor, inconsistent, and typically only appeared when taurine was combined with caffeine, exercise, or sleep deprivation; one trial found lowered vigor after taurine alone. Two of five authors disclosed unrelated funding from a taurine supplement manufacturer (Viridian Nutrition) for other work.
