mineral · for brittle nails

Manganese

Needed to build collagen and the ground substance the nail grows from.

Say that in clinical terms

Cofactor for prolidase in collagen synthesis. Required for mucopolysaccharide formation in nail matrix.

Who was studied: Manganese deficiency is almost unheard of in well-fed countries, so this is unlikely to be your problem.

No human clinical research found on manganese supplementation for brittle nails or nail fragility after thorough PubMed search. Searches for 'manganese brittle nails collagen,' 'manganese nail fragility OR nail brittleness OR nail strength,' and 'manganese prolidase nail collagen' returned zero indexed results. We cannot stand behind this claim on the evidence we have, so it carries no rating.

How much to take

daily

2–5 mg

Combine with biotin and silicon for best results. Effects visible after 2-3 months.

Before you take it

  • NIH ODS Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for manganese is 11 mg/day for adults 19 and older; the primary adverse effect of chronic high-dose intake is neurotoxicity (manganism).
  • People with chronic liver disease have impaired manganese elimination and face heightened toxicity risk even at lower supplemental intakes.
  • NIH ODS explicitly states manganese has no known clinically relevant interactions with medications. Antibiotic chelation interactions (tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones) that are well-documented for calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc do not have equivalent NIH ODS documentation for manganese; prior audit warnings on this point appear to be cross-contaminated from other minerals.
  • Adult Adequate Intake (AI) is 2.3 mg/day for men and 1.8 mg/day for women; most adults meet or exceed this through diet alone, meaning supplementation may provide no incremental benefit for replete individuals.

What we make of it

The enzyme mechanism is real, but the disorder it comes from is genetic, not dietary.

The detail

Manganese genuinely is needed for the enzyme involved in recycling collagen. But the condition where that enzyme fails is a rare inherited disorder, not something caused by diet. No trial or study has tested manganese for nail strength.
